Involute gear cutters are form-relieved cutters used mainly on milling machines to cut gear teeth by machining out each gap individually — different from hobbing, which is a continuous generating process. Here’s the full picture:
What they are
An involute gear cutter is a disc-shaped (or end-mill type) cutter whose tooth profile is machined to match the exact involute curve of the gear space it’s meant to cut. It’s mounted on a milling machine arbor, and the gear blank is indexed (rotated) tooth-by-tooth between cuts.
Why a “set” of 8 cutters exists
Here’s the catch with involute gearing: the tooth shape changes with the number of teeth, even for the same module/DP and pressure angle. A 12-tooth gear has much more curved (deeper cut) flanks than a 100-tooth gear, which is nearly straight-sided (approaching a rack).
Since it’s impractical to make a separate cutter for every tooth count, standard sets use 8 cutters per module/DP, each covering a range:
